Red Lion Foods Sponsors Coast of Wales Challenge
A group of 17 personnel including former Wales RFU Captain Paul Thorburn have decided to embark on a challenging 9 day sea kayaking expedition around the Coast of Wales in aid of 2 Armed Forces charities, in recognition of the commitment and dedication of service men and women across the country.
Over the course of the past 9 months, Paul and his team have been planning this trip and with 4 months to go, they are now focused on improving their physical fitness as this is believed to be one of the most demanding coastal routes.
"We are delighted to have received support from Sea Kayaking UK, based in Anglesey and the owner, Nigel Dennis, himself an experienced and respected sea kayaker, has kindly given his advice and will be loaning much of the equipment – notably Triton double kayaks and paddles, the type of equipment he has used around the world (www.seakayakinguk.com). In addition we have received additional support and advice from Sport Wales at the National Watersports Centre, Plas Menai" added Paul.
The route will take in some of the most stunning coastline around the British Isles. Averaging 30 miles a day, the team will start at Plas Menai, concluding their journey some 9 days and 270 miles later at Langland Bay in Swansea.
Participants will be 18 paddlers in double kayaks. Virtually all of the team are novices, some with NO canoeing/kayaking experience! The team will spend their overnight stops in bed and breakfasts or camp sites just off the coastal route. Within the 17 strong team will be a serving member of the Royal Marines.
According to the experts, this is one hell of a Challenge!
Red Lion Foods wishes Paul and his team a good luck and a safe journey on this exciting adventure.
